M&IS Curriculum

Objectives

  • To enhance our program by providing greater subject area focus and methodological depth
  • To change degree name to reflect our increased subject area focus, and provide better marketing opportunities
  • To improve course offerings through collaborative efforts with other departments

Degree Name

Current

PhD in Management Systems

Proposed

PhD in Management with concentration in (one of the following) Operations Management, Information Systems, Human Resource Management, Strategic Management. Specifically, to one of the four depending on a student's area of concentration.

  • PhD in Management with concentration in Operations Management
  • PhD in Management with concentration in Information Systems
  • PhD in Management with concentration in Human Resource Management
  • PhD in Management with concentration in Strategic Management

Rationale

Our department comprises of areas of concentration from four distinct, but related, functional areas. The current degree name, PhD in Management Systems, does not accurately reflect any of these areas of concentration. The proposed name is a more accurate reflection of the degree received by a PhD student from our department. The name change also allows for better marketing opportunities for our program, and is in alignment with the proposed changes to our curriculum.

Curriculum Revisions

The changes to our curriculum are listed in the following section. It is important to note the following:

  • No new courses are being proposed. All courses currently exist in our curriculum, and are being actively taught.
  • The structure of the PhD program does not change. That is, we still require the same number of courses under College Core, Departmentally Selected, and Concentration.
  • We are requesting a name change for three courses, which more accurately reflects the content in these courses.
  • The College Core and Departmentally Selected courses in the proposed program now reflect a greater emphasis on research methodology courses.
  • The Concentration courses in the proposed program provide a better and more relevant focus to the area of study.

Course Scheduling and Cross Collaboration

To improve our course offerings, and bring about greater efficiency to resource usage, we in addition hope to implement the following with our revised program:

  • We have identified four courses, BAD 74023, BAD 84017, BAD 85057, and BAD 84112, that we can collaboratively teach with the Department of Marketing, College of Business. This increases efficiency in resource usage, provides a larger student body for each class, and a chance to offer courses with greater frequency if needed, so that students graduate in a timely manner.
  • We are refocusing our recruiting efforts to align with our course offerings. For example, in odd years, we might focus on recruiting students for the Operations Management and Information Systems areas, and in even years, for Human Resource Management and Strategic Management areas.

Questions

  1. Are there any new courses created? No. All courses currently exists in our curriculum. Our revised curriculum provides better focus and depth through rearrangement of existing courses.
  2. How does collaboration with Marketing help? We have identified several courses the content of which are being taught in both departments. By collaborating, we bring greater efficiency in resource management, and also provide flexibility with course offerings.
